How can management of supply chains combat climate change and biodiversity loss and address global drivers of deforestation?

The European Union Deforestation Regulation is a set of new rules, with the aim to curb deforestation by regulating the import and sale of commodities such as soy, palm oil, wood, cocoa and coffee within the EU market. This regulation, known as the EUDR, is part of the EU's broader strategy to combat climate change and biodiversity loss by addressing the global drivers of deforestation, and promotes consumption of 'deforestation free' products.

From 2025, businesses across the world, including the UK, that are importing goods into the EU will have to comply with the EUDR and the various technical challenges this presents. This includes ensuring supply chain traceability, satellite monitoring for deforestation and ensuring compliance with national legislation.

ZSL is currently working across a number of these areas through our work with the private sector. We have developed a template due diligence system for compliance with the rubber sector, conducted satellite monitoring on producer companies assessed on SPOTT, and will be supporting smallholders in Western Congo Basin and Thailand to provide evidence of legal production.

This evening event will showcase best-practice in the run up to the EUDR requirements coming in to place in 2025; supporting private-sector compliance, identifying research topics, and informing the public of a key public policy aimed at eliminating deforestation.
