With around 350 Bengal tigers remaining in small, fragmented and isolated populations in Nepal, populations risk becoming less viable and the likelihood of human-wildlife conflict increases.

In 2022, a wildlife survey led by the Department of National Park and Wildlife Conservation, Government of Nepal, and supported by ZSL revealed that Endangered Bengal tigers in Nepal doubled in number for the first time in decades. While great news for tigers, these results highlight the equal importance of efforts to support communities living alongside growing tiger populations. As growing populations of these animals are squeezed into smaller areas, there is a greater likelihood of human contact with tigers leading to human-animal conflict; competition between people and wildlife for resources.

Across the western Terai complex of Nepal, much of the human population live below the poverty line, dependent on forests for fuel, fodder, timber and grazing land. Human-tiger conflict (HTC) can lead to predation of livestock, damage to crops and buildings, and deaths and injury for humans and animals alike.

In this exclusive YouTube Premiere event, speakers from ZSL's Nepal team will explore the current human-tiger conflict scenario in the western Terai, taking the audience through factors influencing HTC in the landscape. Speakers will share their experiences of effective habitat interventions that are being introduced throughout Nepal that are helping to increase tiger populations
